SHORES COUNSELING SPECIALIZED TREATMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH EATING DISORDERS
Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Emotional Over Eating Disorder
Anorexia, Bulimia, and BED are dangerous eating disorders which can lead to lifelong problems and severe medical complications.
At Shores Counseling, we offer a comprehensive team approach to the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. The team consists of the client, parent or partner, physician, dietitian, and therapist.
Our immediate goal is to improve and/or stabilize the physical health of the client, whether severely restricting food intake or severely overeating. Any person who is severely restricting food intake, abusing diet pills and/or purging (self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, laxative or diuretic use) in order to lose weight, should see his/her physician for a physical examination. On-going medical contact may be necessary to monitor and improve physical health.
Working with a registered dietitian who is specifically trained to help a person regain a normal relationship with food and eating is an essential component of the Shores Counseling treatment plan for an eating disorder.

The therapist is the team leader, maintaining communication between the team members. The therapist can educate and work with the client’s parents or partner to assure consistency and a unified approach.
The majority of the treatment occurs between the therapist and the client. Together, they will uncover the “real issues” underlying a preoccupation with food, exercise, and body size. Coping tools will be taught to enable the client to handle life with more control, learn assertiveness, improve self esteem, and deal more effectively with life issues and personal relationships.
An ANAD (Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) support group is available for people with Anorexia or Bulimia. The support group is led by Meredith Westerback and Kathy Richardson. A new group is currently being formed and will begin meeting soon. Groups will meet in the Conference Room at 433 W. Seminole Rd, Muskegon. Participants do not have to be clients at Shores Counseling in order to attend.
