TREATMENT OPPORTUNITIES
FOR PERSONS WITH EATING DISORDERS
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders are dangerous
eating disorders, which can lead to lifelong problems and severe medical
complications. The sooner a person receives treatment, the more positive the
outcome. A team approach is best when diagnosing and treating an eating
disorder.
Physician:
Any person who is severely restricting food intake, abusing diet
pills and/or purging (self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, laxative use,
diuretic use) in order to lose weight should see a physician for a physical
examination. On-going medical contact may be necessary to monitor and improve
physical health.
Therapist:
Individual and/or small group therapy can be very effective in
discovering the "real issues" underneath a preoccupation with food, exercise
and body size. Coping skills can be learned which will enable the person with
the eating disorder to handle life with more control and deal effectively with
relationships with others. Local therapists who specialize in the diagnosis
and
treatment of eating disorders are:
