Lakeshore Eating Disorders Coalition (an initiative of the Muskegon Community Health Project)
The Lakeshore Eating Disorders Coalition (LED-C) is a non-profit,
community organization dedicated to combating eating disorders through
development of awareness, education and prevention strategies.
Vision: LED-C envisions a Muskegon community advocating for a
healthy lifestyle and sense of well being by embracing size acceptance,
internal beauty, and the uniqueness of each individual.
Upcoming Events
November 10, 2009 - Production of the play Full Mouse Empty Mouse.
Full Mouse/Empty Mouse: The Musical
brings to light tools that students and parents can use to cope with stress,
with the teasing of Billy and the fear of being fat experienced by Sally and
her friends. The lyrics, catchy tunes and lovable mouse characters allow the
audience, especially the students, to connect with the characters and their
concerns in a personal way. Children will leave the theater with wonderful new
songs in their heads including, "Why Do I Feel So Fat?", "I Wish
I Could Make Myself Vanish", "Thin and Fat Won't Teach You That"
and "I'm Doing The Best I Can."
The play will be presented free of charge to 4th grade students
throughout Muskegon County. Trained LED-C volunteers will do follow-up
activities in the 4th grade classrooms following the production.
The purpose of the presentation is to educate children and parents
about eating problems and to lower the incidence of dysfunctional
eating patterns in our community.
- A second
performance will be open to the general public at 7 PM. The production is free
of charge. Donations will be gratefully accepted to help defray
costs.
- Following the evening performance, a panel of experts
will answer questions from the audience about eating issues (overeating,
undereating, diets, eating disorders, etc). Dina Zeckhausen (author of the book
Full Mouse Empty Mouse) will be in attendance at our Midwestern Premier
performance of the play. She will be on the panel of experts.
The
play is unique in that it points out the importance of stress and
emotional factors as a potential cause of eating disorders and/or
obesity. Additionally, it demonstrates how the same type of
stress might cause over-eating in one individual and under-eating in
another. Please click on this link to read the article from the Muskegon Chronicle about Full Mouse Empty Mouse
